Case Studies

Future State Customer Service Design

APG partnered with the Business Optimization department at one of the nation’s largest membership associations to support the assessment and future state design of the customer services function. For several months, APG worked directly with client leadership to assess the current operating model vs. a desired future state, performed a detailed assessment of technology assets and supported the development of an enhanced oversight model for co-branded products. Major activities and deliverables included:

  • Facilitation of internal visioning sessions
  • Identification of operational gaps vs. desired future state performance
  • Functional and organizational design
  • Mission and Vision alignment
  • Evaluation of technology platforms, vendors and current utilization to determine Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) and Return on Investment (ROI)

Health Strategy Business Case

Working with the Executive team for the leadership organization of the nations’ largest network of local programs (5,000+) supporting social isolation and hunger for the 65+ population, APG helped to facilitate the development, review and executive approval of a Business Case for a new Health Strategy that included:

  • Revenue projection requirements and methodologies
  • Validation of foundational business case assumptions and market insights
  • Scenario planning and financial model/ROI analysis
  • Assessment of reimbursement and payer readiness requirements
  • Development of a targeted payer “pitch deck” for use in on-going Business Development and Corporate Relations initiatives

Business Integration

APG supported a national Medical Cost Containment and Pharmacy Cost Optimization company through an integration project that combined 3 corporate entities into a single holding company that captured operating synergies, increased market access and expanded the suite of products. Specific integration results included a reduction in SG&A expenses by $3M, achieved $15M in run-rate EBITDA and established the corporate structured to increase same store growth. Specific APG deliverables included:

  • Developed and implemented the Integration Project Governance model including executive sponsor, senior leadership, workstream staffing and cross-functional roles and responsibilities
  • Created centralized project “War Room” structure including master project plan development, periodic status reporting and risk mitigation communications
  • Delivered project status reporting and required corrective action planning to executive leadership
  • Supported executive leadership with on-going business optimization planning

Program Business Planning

APG was engaged by a large regional medical center to support executive leadership in developing the business plan for a new comprehensive Cancer Center program ($50M+ investment) for review and approval by its national corporate parent. Key deliverables included:

  • Net Present Value (NPV), Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) and Internal Rate of Return (IRR) scenario analysis and automated management decision criteria
  • Volume and Unit of Service (UOS) activity-based costing
  • Service line and division level forecasting

Business “Go-Live” Planning & Execution

APG worked with the largest Orthotic and Prosthetic provider organization in the US to plan and execute the go-live of a wholly-owned Managed Care Contracting subsidiary to serve as a national contracting and centralized billing aggregator. Key activities and deliverables included:

  • Creation of the project “war room” and oversight/coordination of 8 separate operational readiness workstreams
  • Requirements development, vendor identification, RFP solicitation/response and selection of claims processing, front-end intake, payment remittance and data/analytics reporting systems
  • Facility location selection, planning and transition project management
  • Staff hiring, on-boarding and training project management (30+ staff)
  • Standard operating procedure development and training
  • Client contracting coordination and implementation (operationalized $50M+ centralized billing model by end of year 1)

Project Roadmap Planning

Working with a strategic business unit for one of the largest membership organizations in the country, APG assessed the current state of various initiatives planned or in motion to develop a 3-year roadmap to drive outyear planning, resource prioritization and future state requirements development. Key activities included:

  • 40+ individual interviews
  • 10 group or team interviews
  • 50+ documents reviewed
  • Development and validation of “asset” inventory and adjacent initiatives
  • Define future state operational “ecosystem”

Consumer Omnichannel Platform Implementation

Partnering with the Distribution and Customers Solutions leadership team at the nation’s largest membership association, APG supported the planning and implementation of its 1st Direct to Consumer Omnichannel insurance platform. APG played a critical role in the identification and sourcing of the platform vendor, facilitation of planning across multiple partners and third-party vendors and development of the underlying business case and operating plan that supported the initial go-live and early performance. Specific APG activities included:

  • Documentation of Request for Information and Request for Proposal materials that included more than 20 technology platform responses
  • Establishment of the implementation project governance model and related project planning and stakeholder status reporting
  • Facilitation of multiple (10+) workstreams supporting the business and technical requirements development
  • Cross-party communications and stakeholder management for 10+ separate entities
  • Development of Board of Director business case and supporting operational/financial projections
  • Implementation management and Year 1 business optimization oversight
  • Program risk management and 3rd party vendor integration planning and management

Resource Planning Automation and Reporting

APG supported executive leadership of a regional managed care organization with development of an automated workload and resource planning tool to enhance annual operation and capital planning processes and streamline client on-boarding and reporting. Key elements of the client implementation planning tool included:

  • Departmental and staff level resource requirements vs. defined utilization and deployment assumptions
  • Automated reporting (e.g. red/yellow/green performance) based on conditional resource deployment scenarios (Min, Max, Hi-Lo, etc.)
